For centuries now, the concept of wearing a bra walked hand in hand with being a woman. Well times they are a-changing. News reports around the world are talking about a Japanese online retailer that's selling bras for cross-dressing men. Apparently, they have been flying off the shelves: 300 male bras have been purchased at $30 a pop in just under two weeks.

It looks like more and more men are interested in bras, and one of the things that they seem to request is that the bra be able to be worn discreetly under men's clothing. One of the hottest potential markets for the male bra, though, is not the cross-dressers. It's the overweight male population. In the mid 1500s, the use of the "corset" was popular in France. I was designed to minimize the waist line and make the chest pop, with serious and sometimes deadly complications for the women who wore them.

By the end of the 1800s, the "modern" bra came about. And from then on, styles and designs have progressed at a particularly steep pace. The concept of cup sizes was introduced, then came the strapless bra, the push-up bra, the invisible bra, the wonderbra, and so on.
